I've always been drawn to questions.

That curiosity eventually led me to the academy, where I found language for questions I had been carrying for years. I earned a Ph.D. in Higher Education Leadership and Policy Studies from Howard University, becoming the program's first doctoral graduate. Research became a way of making sense of the world, and I found deep joy in studying leadership, equity, and the lives of Black women in higher education.

Over time, I began to notice something.

Some of the questions I wanted to ask didn't fit neatly into disciplinary boundaries. I wanted to write about policy alongside poetry. I wanted to understand institutions through music, art, memory, and culture. I wanted to honor rigorous evidence while making room for intuition, creativity, and the kinds of knowing that don't always appear in peer-reviewed journals.

For a while, I wondered if I had to choose.

Today, I see research as a creative practice. Writing is how I think, imagine, and connect. Data tells stories. Art asks different kinds of questions. Policy shapes everyday lives. Together, they offer new ways of understanding ourselves and the communities we serve.

That belief has shaped every part of my work here at ALG. I've led national research initiatives, secured grant funding, partnered with colleges and universities, coached doctoral scholars, designed learning experiences, facilitated leadership conversations, and written for both academic and public audiences. Across each of these spaces, my purpose has remained remarkably consistent: to help people transform inquiry into intentional action.

The ALG Consulting studio is an extension of that journey.

It's a place where scholarship and creativity are not competing identities but companions. Where rigorous thinking and expansive imagination belong in the same conversation. Where questions are welcomed, stories are taken seriously, and knowledge is created with purpose.

I'm Dr. Ashley Gray, a researcher, writer, educator, strategist, and creative. More than anything, I'm someone who still believes that our best questions have the power to reshape the world.
